Bringing sexy back…
October 28, 2007Here Kelly and I are with Ensen all decked out for a formal night on the town. Well, actually all decked out to attend the Governor’s Ball at the Sheraton Waikiki on Saturday night, a fundraiser for the March of Dimes. Aunty Erin kindly agreed to watch Ensen for a few hours at her friend Kim’s house. Unfortunately, he cried most of the night and refused to eat, but I digress.

It’s not often we get to play dress up and get out, so it was actually fun to give it a go. Our agency, McNeil Wilson Communications, co-sponsored a table with the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau which meant others from the office had to play dress up too. My associate Michael Ni and his date for the night Brianna Christianson (photo above) attended with about 700 others who came out in support of fighting birth defects.

The ballroom was beautifully decorated with cool lighting.
It was a great evening for a good cause. A big mahalo to my sister Erin for text messaging me the UH Warriors football scores while she was watching Ensen.

Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck
October 27, 2007
Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck located across the street from Kahuku Hospital on Kamehameha Highway. (Photos in this post provided by Jason Evans/SilverShark Media)
About a month ago, I was on the North Shore on a scout for a TV show with Jason Evans of SilverShark Media (a Maui-based production company) and we decided to have lunch at one of the famous shrimp trucks that line the roadsides. I’ve heard a lot about them but never bothered to stop by in all the years I’ve been living on Oahu. Now I know what all the buzz is about and kick myself for not doing it sooner.

A colleague recommended the Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck for some spicy Korean style shrimp and man was it delicious. For $10, you get a generous portion of sweet, tender, and flavorful shrimp, one scoop rice, and a scoop of mac salad. The Korean lady behind the counter who is the chef, host, and cashier will even peel the shrimp for you if you ask (hint, hint). The menu here is quite diverse with a ton of options for every palate…garlic butter, coconut tempura, surf and turf…you name it, they got it.
It’s not a meal I would have expected to enjoy so much coming out of an old truck that’s been transformed into a roadside kitchen. But as with other food establishments in Hawaii, often times the smaller, older, and more rundown the restaurant is, the better the food you find there. Case and point here, you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Will I be back to a shrimp truck again? You bet! Next time we’ll have to try Giovanni’s, Romy’s, Fumi’s, or one of the other many that line Kamehameha Highway between Kahuku and Turtle Bay Resort. I highly recommend you do the same the next time you’re on the North Shore.

Ensen is learning to talk!
October 23, 2007It seems as if Ensen is getting more and more vocal everyday. Right before his bath he was talking up a storm and I was able to catch this cute video of him.

He’s not fat, he’s just filled with love!
October 22, 2007It never fails. Whenever someone meets Jabbey for the first time, they can’t get over how big he is. And after the initial shock settles in, we’re told that he’s the biggest cat they’ve ever seen, or how he looks like Garfield, or we’re even asked if he’s pregnant. Seeing peoples reactions to him never gets old. I probably would react the same way if I didn’t see him everyday. But we’re so lucky and blessed to have him in our lives. He’s a wonderful cat and he’s not fat, he’s just filled to the gills with love. Oh yeah, in case you’re wondering, he weighs 20 lbs.

Daikon feet?
October 21, 2007It’s amazing how many changes a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy. Some experience clearer skin, some notice stronger nails, some gain 60 lbs., and then there are women like me who experience swelling of the feet. And not just swelling, but the most uncomfortable, painful swelling you can imagine. I remember trying to explain to people over the phone, how swollen my feet were. But it didn’t matter how much I tried. I knew I didn’t do my feet justice. The only thing I could think of to give people a visualization was to have them picture babies feet. So it was funny when I came across this picture of Ensen’s feet that Nate took. It brought back so many memories of my baby feet. If only they were as sweet as it sounds…baby feet.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
October 20, 2007We used to always collect extra plastic bags when shopping so we would have something to throw our kitty poop in. We even solicited bags from our friends. We’ve since built up a pretty big supply…big enough that we don’t want any more plastic bags. So to do our part to malama the aina, we bought this bag. It’s big enough to hold groceries and/or miscellaneous things from Longs. I plan on getting a lot of mileage out of it.

The numbers are in!
October 20, 2007Ensen went in for his 4 month check up on Friday. Here are his stats:
Weight: 13 lb., 15 oz. (25th percentile)
Height: 25 1/4 in. (58th percentile)
Head circumference: 16 3/4 in. (50th percentile)
He also got 3 shots and an oral vaccine. He was such a trooper…we’re so proud of him.

Is TSA really doing its job?
October 19, 2007I haven’t been traveling much for work or pleasure since Ensen was born, so I made the mistake of putting some “illegal” items in my carry-on during my recent trip to Kauai. DOH! The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent in Honolulu told me he needed to check my bag and he found my bottle of shaving cream that exceeded the limitations. He confiscated it, I shed a small tear, and then I carried on to my gate to catch my flight. Everything else in my carry-on was cleared to travel including my oversized toothpaste, oversized face wash, and a nearly oversized bottle of cologne. Glad those weren’t confiscated! We’ll not so fast.
On my return flight home from Kauai, the TSA agent at Lihue Airport told me she needed to check my bag. What did she find? My oversized toothpaste and oversized face wash. OOOPS! I asked her if the screening station regulations at each airport were different as I just traveled yesterday with these items in my bag. She half jokingly told me “our eyes are better than theirs (the Oahu TSA agents).” THAT’S A SCARY THOUGHT!
But not as scary as this story I just read today on CNN.com titled “Airport screeners failed to find most fake bombs, TSA says.”
I can understand a little toothpaste or face washing slipping through every now and then, but c’mon screeners, let’s try to catch a few more of those fake bombs, please. YOWSER!

It’s all about The Golf Channel!
October 19, 2007
No. 17 (Par 3) at Wailua Golf Course.
One of the aspects of my job that I love is the diversity of projects I get to work on supervising the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB) account. One month it’s TOP CHEF, the next it’s a new fall campaign to entice visitors to the islands, and this month it’s working with The Golf Channel (TGC).
Being an avid “golf-a-holic” makes this project all the more fun. HVCB has been partnering with TGC over the past few years to bring the “Aloha Swing” to viewers across the country. This two-month promotion is tied to the PGA, Champions, and LPGA tour events that take place in Hawaii in January/February.

The assignment this month is to shoot a series of vignettes with TGC personality Stephanie Sparks across the islands showcasing “Hawaii’s Hidden Golf Adventures.” I had the opportunity to work with her a couple years ago on a similar project and glad to be doing so again this year. We’re taking a look at some of the “lesser known” courses and highlighting a hole at each which offers a real “golf adventure.” Mark Rolfing (a.k.a. Mr. Golf Hawaii) and the awesome production crew of Mike Yasutake (camera) and Scott Culbertson (audio) of Yasu Productions are also by my side to ensure everything looks great.

So far, we’ve been to Kauai…with Maui and Hawaii’s Big Island being completed by next week. Oahu courses will be completed in December when Stephanie returns. In case you’re wondering, here’s were we’re going:
KAUAI
MAUI
HAWAII’S BIG ISLAND
Be sure to tune into The Golf Channel in January. These vignettes will begin airing with the Mercedez-Benz Championship.

Ensen sleeps for almost 11 hours!
October 16, 2007It was an exciting night a few days ago. I woke up Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. and to my surprise, realized that Ensen slept for almost 11 hours! Doesn’t he look so adorable sleeping on his side?
