More cousins in more places…

November 30, 2007

Don’t we look like an AT&T commercial? Every now and then all of us cousins get together and we line up by height and take pictures. There’s just two things missing…cousins Lance and Jared. Hopefully we’ll all get together again soon. The last time we took a complete picture was five years ago when Jonny B graduated from high school.

Ensen is a babies man!

November 25, 2007

In the past two weeks we’ve been to three 1st birthday parties. The first was for Kau’i, (seen below in the purple dress) the second was for Dayton (pictured below in the beige collared shirt) and the third was for Dane (seen wearing a black shirt). We all had a great time at the parties. But I think Ensen had the best time of all!

What a game!

November 24, 2007

p1060423.jpg
U.H. fans storm the field after the Warriors beat Boise State 39-27. What a great scene!

I’m still recovering from the University of Hawaii Warriors vs. Boise State Broncos game last night. If anyone knows where my voice went, please let me know so I can get it back. All I can say is this was one of the most exciting sporting events I’ve ever been to. Sold out crowd at Aloha Stadium, WAC title up for grabs, Bowl Championship Series (BCS) dreams within reach, and UH’s undefeated season on the line against one of our biggest rivals. You couldn’t ask for more in a game with so much at stake!

p1060370.jpgp1060386.jpgp1060416.jpg
From left: Pre-game festivities and a packed Aloha Stadium. Colt Brennan breaks the all-time NCAA TD record. Fans celebrate U.H.’s first WAC title in 29 years.

It’s the first game I’ve been to this year and it did not disappoint. Seats in the blue section on the 30-yard line, Colt Brennan putting up fantasy type stats once again and smashing the NCAA Division I record for career TD passes, the fans up in their seats cheering their heads off, and Hawaii winning its first outright WAC title in school history. The energy and atmosphere was unreal. There’s really nothing like being at the game and seeing it live. A big thanks to my pal Regan for inviting me and to Kelly and Ensen for letting me go.

p1060353.jpg
Kirk Matthews and Linda Coble parked next to us and joined our tailgate. We had some fun!

And like any good fan, we got to the stadium early (at 11 a.m…game didn’t start until 4 p.m.) for a little tailgate action. We met up with Regan’s friends and also ended up spending the afternoon with KHON 2 News Anchor Kirk Matthews and his wife Linda Coble (a former newswomen herself) who happened to park next to us. Good food, plenty of drinks, and excellent company made for a great afternoon.

From left: Lance and Jorie with Kirk and Linda. One cool shirt. Me, Lorne and Regan kicking back.

With the WAC title in hand, the next mission is clear: beat the Washington Huskies next Saturday, go undefeated for the season, and solidify our case for a BCS invitation. If anyone can do it, the Bows certainly can.

CONGRATULATIONS U.H. WARRIORS. BCS HERE WE COME!

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 22, 2007

p1060288.jpg

As we prepare to head down to Kaneohe to spend Thanksgiving with Kelly’s family, Ensen (5 months old) already had somewhat of a “Thanksgiving” meal this morning - squash. The missionaries brought that with them to America, right? We finally gave him a taste of something other than mother’s milk and rice cereal.

So how did he like it? I wouldn’t say he “loved” it and definitely found it rather “interesting.”

p1060300.jpg

Here’s a couple more photos of Ensen enjoying his first Thanksgiving. Hope you all have a good one too!

Guitar Hero III rocks!!

November 22, 2007

gh3.jpg

Kelly and I are not a “gamers” (those who love computer/video games) by any stretch of the imagination, but there’s one Playstation 2 game in particular that’s gotten us hooked and we can’t get enough. That sinful, stress relieving devil is known as GUITAR HERO and recently Red Octane came out with its third installment of the franchise, GUITAR HERO III - LEGENDS OF ROCK. The bands and songs in this game are unreal and include some of my favorites like Metallica (One), Slayer (Raining Blood), and Guns ‘n Roses (Welcome to the Jungle).

So what does this all mean? A guitar playing wannabe like myself now has the opportunity to “feel real” and become a rock legend if only for a moment. The surprising and sobering reality is that Kelly consistently kicks my butt at this game. HUH? Question: I know how to play a real guitar…what’s up with this? Apparently, even legendary guitarist Slash of Guns ‘n Roses admits the game was somewhat difficult to get adjusted to. See, I knew there was a reason for my troubles…

But seriously, if you like rock music and you like to play video games, this is a game for the ages. This is one the entire family can enjoy.

If you’re an addict too, we’d love to hear from you.

Does life imitate art? NO WAY!

November 14, 2007

p1050715.jpg

Parents don’t get nearly enough credit for all the things they have to put up with from their kids. Take me for example. On my trip back home to Kona a couple weeks ago, I came across some interesting art pieces created by yours truly. No wonder I ended up in public relations. Did my parents really deserve getting these “priceless” gifts for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Thanksgiving (check out that paper mache turkey…chee hoo!).

Seriously, how many useless glazed clay bowls does one family need? Obviously from the photo above, one in yellow, a purple one with blue on the inside, and a hideous solid blue bowl with lightning bolt patterns. Did my teachers at Konawaena High School really think this was acceptable?

p1050718.jpg

But in all seriousness, all loved parents deserve to get a salisbury steak TV dinner complete with mashed potatoes, green peas, and brown gravy all over the top. Not to mention a side order of “igloo.” C’mon, what else do you give your parents for Valentine’s Day when you’re a kid? After all, don’t these pieces of “art” just scream “I love you mom and dad…thanks for everything?” I must have thought so…

Obviously, I was never going to be the next great Chinese-Korean American sculptor. My legacy as an artist will have to live with these gems.

Okay, so maybe I’m being too hard on myself. The truth is I can’t wait to see what kind of art Ensen brings home to mom and dad when he grows up. Whatever it is, I know we’ll love it. Just like my parents did.

Boys and their toys!

November 9, 2007

p1050781.jpg
E.T. + Speak ‘n Spell = some ancient and funny looking toys.

Everytime I return home to Kona to visit mom and dad, I can never resist the urge to tear into the boxes of toys that fill my old bedroom closet and reminisce about the past. He-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Star Wars are just some of the items that line the shelves. Throw in a couple thousand baseball cards, some Garbage Pail Kids, old Powell Perelta skateboard decks, and a few beers, and we’re talking about a fun night of exploration. Hey, it’s Kona…there’s really nothing else to do there after 8 p.m…

But the most interesting toys I found on our recent trip back to Hawaii’s Big Island were hidden in the busted-up, unmarked boxes that were just screaming my name. So like I always do, I answered the call. What did I find?

p1050772.jpg

Monster trucks were one of my favorite things to watch on TV. The thrill of watching massive trucks like Big Foot and Rolling Thunder speed around a dirt track and crushing cars was unreal to me. Now that I’m all grown up, I get to park next to one every day at home…we talked about our neighbor’s monster truck in a previous blog entry.

p1050778.jpgp1050779.jpg

Do these guys look familiar to you? If not, where have you been the last 20 years? I nearly fell off the bed when these guys greeted me in one box. Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters, Yoda from Star Wars, Mr. T from the A Team, and good ‘ol E.T. and his Speak ‘n Spell looking pretty darn good after all these years. So good, they decided to pose for me in the picture on the right. I get the feeling Yoda doesn’t approve of E.T. caressing Marshmallow Man and Mr. T looks quite angry. Get over it Mr. T…it’s the 21st century! I pity the fool…

p1050774.jpg

M.U.S.C.L.E. men were a big deal back in the day. Looking at these disgusting, plastic “freaks of nature” now, I  only wonder to myself….WHY?

There’s a few more boxes in the closet that I didn’t have a chance to get around to. I can guarantee those will be throughly explored and blogged about the next time I visit Kona.

We conquered Kona!

November 8, 2007

After looking at a calender and realizing that my days at home with Ensen were numbered, I told Nate that we better fly to Kona sooner than later. So after a quick search online, our flight was booked. We only had a few days to put everything together. Luckily, Kona Grandma bought supplies ahead of time so we didn’t need to pack the world.

We were nervous and anxious to see how Ensen would react to flying. To our surprise, he did great! He watched the rain glide off the window as we prepared for take off. And the next thing we knew we were up in the air and he was fast asleep. I held him the entire flight, and before we knew it, we had landed.

p1050606.jpg p1050611.jpg p1050623.jpg

p1050765.jpg

Ensen was so happy to see Kona Grandpa and Grandma. And it was obvious that they were equally happy to see him.

After a good nights rest, we took Ensen to Kailua Town. Our first stop was Kmart to pick up an umbrella stroller. I wasn’t sure if he’d fit, but decided to try it anyway. It really came in handy. Carrying 15 lbs for more than 10 minutes ends up feeling like 50 lbs!

We also went to Waikoloa and Pine Tree Cafe. I told Nate, no matter what, I had to have their Korean chicken. Best Korean chicken ever! Make sure you try it the next time you’re in Kona.

p1050836.jpg p1050636.jpg p1050761.jpg

After a full day of cruising the town, it was bath time for Ensen (thanks to Aunty Erin for taking this adorable picture). It was Ensen’s first “real” kitchen sink bath. No fancy tubs or thermometers. And as always he enjoyed himself. I think bath time is his favorite time of the day.

bathtime.jpg

We were in Kona for 3 days and 3 nights and it went by so fast. A fun time was had by all and we can’t wait until we fly up again. Who knows, maybe next time we’ll be brave and make our way out to Hilo!
