Aloha09 Project: Sharing Aloha thru social media

January 5, 2009

What started as a simple suggestion on New Year’s Eve to rally the Hawaii Twitterverse together for an “online paina (party)” has gone to the next level thanks to my pal Vernon Brown of 808Talk.com.

My suggestion was to use the #aloha09 hashtag to more easily track New Year’s celebrations across the state on Twitter. That same night, the Aloha09 Project was born transforming the idea into a year-long project to share the Aloha Spirit with friends around the world through social media. As Vernon describes it:

The Aloha09 Project is a way to spread the Aloha and show the world what it’s really all about and why Hawaii is so special. Sort of like our own engaging campaign to express to the world why Hawaii should be your place to visit and enjoy. After all there is so much beauty, so many friendly people, and of course lots of Aloha!

I think it’s a fun and creative way for those who love Hawaii to share their experiences and insights and I hope locals and visitors alike will support the Aloha09 Project.

So how can you get involved? If you’re on Twitter, use the #aloha09 hashtag in any tweet. As Vernon explains on his blog, “you can follow along with the stream of #aloha09 or add @aloha09 on Twitter for starts. Then make it a goal to tweet at least one #aloha09 everyday and spread the joy.”

For those who aren’t on Twitter and don’t plan to sign up, you can also participate by using aloha09 as a tag on your blog or website for any post that spreads aloha. It’s that simple.

A big mahalo to Vernon for starting this project and I’m looking forward to what becomes of it throughout 2009.
