Oktoberfest at the Ala Moana Hotel has become one of Honolulu’s most anticipated cultural events, so we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to introduce Ensen (4 months) to a little German culture…Hawaii style. So we gathered up some family and friends – Glen, Kim, Emmi, and Brandon – and headed down there this past Wednesday.

From left: Emmi with a pitcher off “good stuff.” Glen observes a rare event…Kim drinking beer..Ensen can’t bear to watch. Me, Brandon, and Glen sucking ’em up.

For the past 37 years, the hotel has drawn thousands annually to its version of the Bavarian celebration of German food, music with the Edwelweiss Band, and hearty selection of beer and schnapps…lots of alcohol! Locals and visitors alike dawn their lederhosen and dirndle’s for this weeklong event. It’s really a great event for the entire family. Kelly and I have been coming the last several years for the food…though we didn’t eat much this year…only the Pig’s Knuckle.

From left: Delicious Pig’s Knuckle with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, pickles, and mustard…YUMMY! Ensen in “awe” of Glen’s devoured knuckle. Black Forest Cake.

After all that eating and drinking (we tried a few different beers…Spaten Paulaner, Windermere) there’s only one way to work it off at Oktoberfest. Do the Chicken Dance! In the video below, Kelly and Ensen’s do their rendition of the always popular dance.

Needless to say, a good time was had by all. If you haven’t been to Oktoberfest before, you need to experience it at least once. We’ll see you next year at the 38th anniversary of the event.
