What began as a dare between two friends became a proud and memorable moment for the Kam family last night as we witnessed Kelly’s brother Jon compete for the first time in the 2008 Paradise Cup bodybuilding championships at the Sheraton Waikiki. I never would have expected to find ourselves here on a Saturday night, but there was no way we were going to miss this.
If you’re wondering how this all got started, let me explain. Jon had made an innocent bet with his friend that if she entered a local beauty pageant, he would compete in the Paradise Cup. With that said, I think you can fill in the blanks on the rest of this story. Of course, once we found out that he’d be strutting his stuff in Speedo on a stage in front of hundreds, giving himself a fake tan, and spraying PAM cooking oil on his body (hey, it’s what bodybuilders do), we were obligated to give him a little gas for it. Okay, a lot of gas, but we’re family so we can do that.
In the end, Jon had the last laugh. He put himself on a ridiculously strict diet, trained like a madman, and committed himself to looking his best for the show. I’m no bodybuilding expert, but he looked better than most of the guys in the Men’s Novice Middleweight class in my opinion. Although he didn’t bring home a trophy, he did a hell of a job and earned a lot of respect from his family and friends for doing something most of us would never even consider.
CONGRATULATION JON! YOU ARE THE MAN!
Following a great post-event dinner at Cheesecake Factory with more than 20 family and friends – in which Jon officially shed his diet and indulged in a piece of chocolate cheesecake and a cold beer – the big question everyone had at the end of the night was “are you doing this again next year?” He didn’t really give a definite yes or no answer, so I guess we’ll just have to see. In the meantime, we’ll keep Ensen’s schedule clear just in case Uncle Jon needs his posing instructor again next year. Oh, you didn’t know…
