Have you tried this version of mochi ice cream?

You’re probably looking at the photo above and thinking to yourself, “what the hell is that?” Let me explain.

When my mom was pregnant with me more than three decades ago, she used to sprinkle arare (a.k.a. mochi crunch or kakimochi) on her vanilla ice cream. It was one of those strange cravings women get when they’re pregnant…from what I understand.

But that strange craving tuned out to be one of the most amazing dessert combinations I’ve ever experienced. And I’m still enjoying it until this very day! Like the blissful marriage of peanut butter and jelly, the salty and crunchiness of the arare is a perfect compliment to the creamy and sweet vanilla ice cream.

I’ll admit this variation on “mochi crunch ice cream” might be one of those “only in Hawaii” delights. But trust me, once you have it, you’ll be wanting it again…and again. Give it a try and post your comments. I’m curious to know what you all think.

Bon appetit!
