Gooch was so busy the entire day, but we managed to catch him for a quick moment for this group photo. From left: John Memering, Ian Bishop, Mark Noguchi, Paul Zarate, me, and Dave Caldiero.

It was quite a scene at He‘eia Kea Pier last weekend as hundreds turned out for the grand reopening of He‘eia Pier General Store and Deli. My friend and chef Mark Noguchi fulfilled his dream of opening a restaurant with the support of local promoters and restauranteurs Vertical Junkies. The group has taken over the windward institution, which closed in 2008 after being operated by the Choy family for nearly 30 years.

The deli will continue to serve local food with extra aloha. According to Mark, the goal is to source all the menu ingredients from as close to the area as possible, which means buying fish direct from the fishermen at the pier and procuring taro and other veggies from nearby farms. That means local, sustainable, and ono food served Tuesday – Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s a good idea to stay in touch with He‘iea Pier via Twitter and Facebook for menu specials and much more.

This food philosophy isn’t a surprise since Mark previously cooked at Town restaurant in Kaimuki and at Chef Mavro prior to that. It was during his time at Town that I got to know him quite well, eating there way too often and hanging out after hours. Aside from being a great chef, he’s one of the funniest, generous, and most talented and motivated guys I know.

He‘eia Pier itself is a special place for our family. My father-in-law and brother-in-law have been fishing there for ages and Ensen always loves the opportunity to cast his line and catch some fish there. And he always catches fish. But beyond our family, we know this area is a special place for many in the community and it’s good to know that good guys like Mark and his team are there for the right reasons. I think this tweet by Ed Kenney, chef/owner of Town/Downtown restaurants said it best.

The Kam family wishes Mark, Russ Inouye, Ricky Goings, and the Vertical Junkies crew nothing but the best heading forward. If you’re in the area, check ’em out and don’t forget to grab an ice cake too! Perfect treat on a warm Hawaii day.

BTW, local food writer Lesa Griffith did a nice post about the event on Honolulu Magazine’s Biting Commentary blog. Honolulu Star-Advertiser food writer and Take a Bite blogger Nadine Kam also wrote about it too!
