5 Ways To Wear A Suit

To be completely honest, I had no idea there was more than one way to wear a suit. But anyone who knows me and my lack of any fashion sense understands why I just said that. So this mixer event being put on by PRSA Hawaii at Club Monaco on October 29 might be a good thing for me to attend. Plus it’s free.

Wait, do they have guys stuff at this place? Thew, yes they do…

I’ve been a PRSA Hawaii member ever since I started my career in PR 10 years ago. We’ve had some great monthly professional development luncheon programs along the way, but I’ve got to say I’ve never seen demand for the one we have coming up next week Wednesday, August 27.

The program topic of social media itself is a hot one, but look at the lineup of speakers we’ve secured to present next week. It’s no wonder we already have 74 people registered for the luncheon. Are you in the know of Web 2.0 and will you be there for a great program?

Here’s some information I’ve taken from the PRSA Hawaii website:

Nadine Kam (@fashiontribe on Twitter and no relation to me though I do get a lot of her e-mails) is the style and travel editor at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. She also writes the Fashion Tribe blog and is social media enthusiast like many of us.

Roxanne Darling (@roxannedarling on Twitter) is co-owner of Bare Feet Studios and has been working on the web since 1995. She is one of the original video podcasters and the star of the award-winning Internet TV show, Beach Walks with Rox (http://www.beachwalks.tv), which has over 650 episodes. She is also one of the lead organizers of PodCamp Hawaii which takes place in October.

Mary Fastenau is president and a co- founder of StarrTech Interactive, one of Hawaii’s largest interactive development companies. She frequently speaks at universities and professional organizations, making her one of Hawaii’s foremost experts on Internet marketing.

As senior online media planner, Dan Zelikman is the lead strategist for StarrTech Interactive on Web 2.0 ideas, online media purchasing, implementation, analysis, and optimization. Dan has worked on a wide range of accounts, including AIG Hawaii, Hawaiian Telcom, Marriott Hawaii and Bank of Hawaii. He’s also an avid surfer and all around good guy.

I look forward to seeing everyone at this event and we’re guaranteed to have some fun. Before I end, I need to give a shout out to my colleague Kristen Bonilla (@kwis10b on Twitter) for leading the effort to pull together this awesome program. I think it’s safe to say we’re “back in black” with this one.

UPDATE: Since this posting, two fellow bloggers – Melissa Chang and Christa Wittmier have passed along kind congratulations in their personal blogs. Thought I would share that with you. Mahalo for the support ladies! The Honolulu Advertiser also covered the event in the paper today.

The HVCB PR team accepts the Best of Show award with our client Darlene Morikawa (in blue). From left: Kim Miyashiro, me, Rhegan Liwanag-Luat, Janet Crawford (PRSA Hawaii president), Michael Ni, and Karl Nakagawa.

As many know by now, our firm – McNeil Wilson Communications – won “Best of Show” in the 2008 PRSA Hawaii Koa Anvil Awards for its work on the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau’s “Hawaii: As Seen On TV” campaign. This is a program in which we target national broadcast TV shows to come to Hawaii and feature the destination “editorially” into the episodes. This award was won for our work on HGTV’s Design Star Finale, Food Network’s Dinner: Impossible, and Travel Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.

It was a great night for the agency and in addition to Best of Show, as we won 12 awards total for the night. Most of any agency/organization represented.  Erika Engle of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin did a nice story today on the event and all of the winners.

Mahalo to everyone that won and particularly to everyone at McNeil Wilson Communications. Great job done by all!

Next week Thursday is a big night for Hawaii’s public relations industry as the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Hawaii Chapter hosts the 25th Koa Anvil Awards at the Halekulani on July 17. This event has earned the reputation as THE premier communications gala in the Islands celebrating outstanding public relations programs and tactics.

It’s a rare night where PR people will actually be in the spotlight (usually we’re operating behind the scenes) and the McNeil Wilson Communications gang will be out in full force. Our firm has been fortunate over the past few years to win numerous Koa Anvils and Koa Hammers, but most importantly “Best of Show” the past three of the last four years. For those unfamiliar with the event, here’s a couple stories written by Erika Engle of The Honolulu Star-Bulletin from 2006 and 2007.

We’ve got some very strong entries in the competition this year and it will be exciting to see how it all goes down. I look forward to seeing everyone there and if you haven’t reserved your seat, you have until the end of day today to RSVP online. Wish us luck!
